We are not the only means of promoting kindness. There are many opportunities to join a good cause. Please consider supporting entertainers that use their voice and wealth for the betterment of society, such as Ellen DeGeneres, Joan Jett, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend, Gary Sinise, Lady Gaga and Goldie Hawn. Celebrities can be easy targets, please refrain from engaging in negative online discussions.
The Trevor Project continues to be pioneers in reaching out to LGBTQ youth in crisis. They offer life-affirming resources including a nationwide, 24/7 crisis intervention lifeline, digital community and advocacy/education programs that create a safe, supportive and positive environment for everyone. They are committed to putting a stop to teen suicide.
Joan Jett has supported our troops with her sincere acts of kindness for years by entertaining them through the USO tours and visiting wounded veterans at military hospitals and special events. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend, of the band The Who, have supported Teenage Cancer Trust for many years in the U.K.; the first U.S. Center was opened in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in November 2012. Talking about the charity, Roger said: “At a time when your body is changing, your social life is everything and you’re still trying to figure out who you are, getting cancer can seem like an impossible blow to take.”
Their mission: “At the Gary Sinise Foundation, we serve our Nation by honoring our defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need. We do this by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities.” This foundation promotes the importance of keeping our country strong by taking care of those who serve.
Lady Gaga’s new foundation supports programs and initiatives that deal with all aspects of empowering youth. “My mother and I have initiated a passion project. We call it the Born This Way Foundation. Together we hope to establish a standard of Bravery and Kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment.”
The Hawn Foundation promotes children’s academic success in school and in life through social and emotional learning. Their signature educational initiative is the MindUp Program. The MindUp curriculum includes performing acts of kindness, acting with gratitude and taking mindful action within their communities along with other numerous lessons appropriate to the grade level.
The Boston Celtics are also doing their part in supporting Horizons For Homeless Children. The Shamrock Foundation benefits children directly through programs that provide education and support along with partnering with community based organizations that provide healthcare, shelter and vital services for children in need.
