There is a young woman in one of my night classes who does not have a car. After class, she waits for her brother to finish work, pick her up, and drive her home, which is two towns away. At this time of night, there is almost nobody in the school building, so I often find myself staying late to keep her company while she waits for her ride. One night, her brother didn’t show up. After waiting until midnight, I offered to take her home even though it was the opposite direction from where I was headed. She was very grateful. With no money for cab fare, and nobody else available to give her a ride, she might not have gotten home that night if not for me.
