A Desperate Phone Call

A friend of mine had her license suspended last year for reasons I won’t go into, as they aren’t important to the story.  She has an apartment in NH and works in the Lowell, MA area, so this caused the need for several adjustments in getting to and from work.  There were several occassions where she had contacted me as a “fallback plan” when her regular rides weren’t available, and as she’s always been an especially close friend, I helped out whenever I could and she’d always thank me and either contribute money for gas or treat me to dinner somewhere, sort of a “one sequin for another” kind of thing.  This past Monday, I had just gotten home from a long drive and was trying to get some work done on my computer while fighting to stay awake after the long day when she called me on my cell with tears in her voice. Her initial ride for the night, and all of her other back-ups had fallen through or were unavailable and she was stranded at work. Was there any way I could help get her into my town to meet another ride that was going to help get her home so she could be able to finally go to get her license renewed?  I immediately told her not to worry and that I would be there shortly. She immediately started thanking me profusely.  We got her to her rendezvous and she got home with no further problem. She’s now got her new license and is back on the road, much wiser for the problems she’s had to deal with over the last year and thankful for the friends who helped her deal with them.
